Powerhouses China and Japan have been drawn in the same half of the Uber Cup.
The draw ceremony, held after the conclusion of the group stage, saw hosts and top seeds China set for a quarterfinal clash with Denmark, while in the same half, 2018 champions Japan were drawn with India.
Defending champions Korea will have to reckon with Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals. The winners of this tie face either Thailand or Indonesia.
The top two teams in each of the four groups made it to the quarterfinals.
In the final group matches of the morning session, Japan fought off a spirited Indonesian team to take top place in Group C.
The Japanese faced a setback in the opening match, with Akane Yamaguchi falling to Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, 17-21 21-17 21-13.
Indonesia were in sight of an upset in women’s doubles too, but Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida survived a 72-minute battle against scratch combination Lanny Tria Mayasari/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, 21-9 20-22 21-16, before Aya Ohori gave Japan the lead with a hard-fought win over Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo.
Rena Miyaura/Ayako Sakuramoto clinched the tie for Japan in the second doubles, beating Meilysa Trias Puspitasari/Rachel Alleyssya Rose. With Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi beating prodigy Tomoka Miyazaki, Japan finished winners at 3-2.
In Group B, Thailand maintained their all-win record as they blanked Chinese Taipei 5-0. Minus their team icon Tai Tzu Ying, Chinese Taipei couldn’t offer much resistance, with only Pai Yu Po in third singles able to take a game off Thailand.
Malaysia finished third in Group B beating Australia 4-1, while Hong Kong China took third place in Group C beating Uganda 5-0.
