Algerian men completed a hattrick at the All Africa Men’s & Women’s Team Championships 2022 by defeating Egypt in the final in Kampala, Uganda yesterday.
The 3-0 win also confirms their berth at the Thomas Cup in Bangkok in May.
Algeria, who had seen off Mauritius by the same scoreline in the semifinal earlier in the day, were stretched by maiden finalists Egypt in the first two matches.
Youcef Sabri Medel dropped his opening game 21-8 to Adham Hatem Elgamal before taking the next two 21-16 21-18.
Mohamed Abderrahime Belarbi was also taken to a decider by Ahmed Salah but prevailed 21-18 22-24 21-18 in 58 minutes.
Adel Hamek then sealed the deal for Algeria, who have not relinquished their crown since first becoming champions in 2018, with a 22-20 21-13 victory over Mohamed Mostafa Kamel.
In the women’s competition, holders Egypt proved too strong for first-time finalists Uganda.
Fadilah Shamika Mohamed Rafi gave the hosts a great start by winning the opening game against Doha Hany 21-12 but the world No.93 bounced back with two 21-18 victories.
Nour Ahmed Youssri gave the Egyptians some breathing space with a 21-14 21-18 success over Tracy Naluwooza but Husina Kobugabe briefly revived the homesters’ hopes following a straightforward 21-8 21-8 win against Jana Hesham Mohamed Abdelkader.
Abdelkader however, made amends in the first doubles alongside Hany, beating Naluwooza and Brenda Awor 18-21 21-19 23-21 to seal the title and a spot at the Uber Cup for Egypt.
The players return to action at the All Africa Individual Championships 2022 today.
